Third Grade News

Third Grade News Welcome to the beginning of another year! I have enjoyed meeting and quickly getting to know all my wonderful students. They have been very helpful and excited about learning new things. We have been reviewing and practicing school procedures and expectations daily. These are important to ensure we have a successful school year. Remember to encourage your child's good behavior and show them how proud you are of their accomplishments! Thank you for your cooperation, communication, and involvement. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Here's what will be focusing on for the month of September. Math – We will learn how to tell time to the minute as well as review calendar skills. We will also explore addition and subtraction more in depth and apply these skills to solving word problems. Reviewing math facts at home would be very helpful for your child's success. The first unit has ten lessons with a test to follow. Thereafter, a test will be given after every fifth lesson. Homework is nightly and will be graded and recorded. Reading – We will begin in our Journey's book and enjoy a variety of stories along with focusing on spelling, grammar, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Starting September 14, we will be testing weekly in Reading as well as Spelling. Writer's Workshop – We are completing daily mini lessons on writing skills and will follow with a rough draft and a final copy. Religion – We have begun our new series and are learning about being a part of a religious community and learning very stories from the Bible. Social Studies 3 – We are learning about communities as well as land and resources. Look for a study guide to come home several days before each Chapter test. Social Studies 2 – We have begun the year in a unit separate from our books called maps and globes. Students are also learning about the continents as well. A study guide will be provided before each test to help the students prepare. Handwriting – We reviewed printing and have now begun cursive handwriting. Each day a new letter will be introduced with practice combining letters. The class really enjoys this part of their day and can certainly practice at home to improve their strokes. At the end of the year we will challenge ourselves and write our last spelling test in cursive handwriting! Important Dates in September: 9/5 No School Labor Day 9/13 Magazine sales start 9/21 Third Grade Mass, Noon dismissal 9/27 Third Grade Living Rosary
