End of the Year

Written by

Wow! I cannot believe we are wrapping up the 2013-2014 school year....what a fun first year it has been at SJS!

Here's what you can expect for the remainder of the year...

6th Grade Math: We are nearing the end with our math lessons. We just finished Lesson 110 and are getting ready for a test on Wednesday, May 7. We will have two more tests this year, as well as ten more lessons of homework. Our major focus for these last ten lessons is geometery; we are working with symmetery, angle measures, and congruent figures. The students seem to enjoy working with these concepts & are doing well in math!

5th Grade Language: Like math, we are getting close to the end of our language series for 5th grade as well. There are two more spelling/grammar quizzes this year (Thursday, May 8 is the test over Lesson 22 & Tuesday, May 20 is the test over lesson 23). We are working on verbs and perfect tenses of verbs and will transition into adjectives next week. We will finish out the year with a short writing activity. If you would like the spelling words for your child's list, please e-mail me and I can make those available to you!

6th Grade Language: Like math, we are getting close to the end of our language series for 6th grade as well. There are still two units left this year, which means two more grammar/spelling quizzes. Our assessments over Lesson 22 will be Thursday, May 8 and our assessments over Lesson 23 will be Tuesday, May 20. We will continue to have writer's workshops with our lessons, but will close out the year with one last writing assessment. Please be on the "lookout" for any hand outs coming home regarding this! As always, if you would like the spelling words, please let me know and I can make those available for you.

7th Grade Language: The 7th graders just finished up a mechanics unit over capitalization. They seemed to enjoy "diving in" to the mechanics of capitalization and proper nouns (...maybe that's just me!) :) Now, we are working on a punctuation unit that will take us until the last week of school. We are working with commas, abbreviations, semicolons, colons...all the FUN grammar stuff! We will finish up the year with a very quick interviewing/writing project, which will highlight interviewing & communication skills. We will have three more weeks of spelling: our last spelling test will be May 23. As always, if you would like the spelling words, please let me know and I can make those availiable to you.

8th Grade Language: The 8th graders just finished up a mechanics unit highlighting capitalization and proper nounrs. They did a great job with that & we have moved on to mechanics of punctuation. This unit is all about using correct punctuation in everyday language: semicolons, colons, commas, abbreviations...you name it! This unit will take us until the last week of school, where we will finish up with a (brief) interviewing/writing unit. This unit will highligh interviewing & communication skills, which will be very helpful for the "real world" (...like high school!) We will have three more weeks of spelling: our last spelling test will be May 23. As always, if you would like thw rods, please let me know and I can make those availabe to you.

7-8th Reading: We finally finished our Holocaust unit by wrapping up "The Book Thief." All in all, it was a great book and it was packed full of good discusion, vocabulary, and themes! Tomorrow (Wednesday 5/6), we are starting "Heaven is for Real," a moving story about a boy who has visited Heaven. This will be a great way to wrap up such a fun reading class, and I know the kids have wanted to read this book for awhile. Here is some information on Colton's true story!

I am sending all my well-wishes to the graduating class of 2014. I will miss your energy, humor, and insights. It was truly a blessing to get to teach you for a year, and I hope you all come back to visit & fill us in on all of the great things you are doing with your lives!

Have a safe and happy summer everyone!
