November Blog

Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break! I hope everyone enjoyed break and got plenty to eat. Only 14 short days until Christmas break (but who's counting) & a lot to get done before the new year! Here's what has been happening in Ms. Campbell's classes...

8th grade math- We are well on our way in trimester 2 and the students are doing great. We will continue with our same math pattern, 5 lessons and then a test & then an investigation after every 10 lessons. Our focus for the next 10 lessons will be geometric shapes & properties associated with them. We will have our final test before break on Friday, December 19. If you know you will be gone, please make arrangements to take that test early so it can be inputed in the grade book before break!

8th Grade Language- Our focus for 2nd trimester is grammar, grammar, grammar! We started with The Sentence, which was mostly review of subjects, predicates, types of sentences, etc. They all did very well and we had fun creating our own sentences and fragments to share with each other! Our next unit will focus on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We will test over that and wrap up with a short writing unit right before winter break. We will continue to have spelling these next 3 weeks, so please study with your student, as spelling is an integral part of their grade.

7th-8th Grade Reading- We started the trimester with a book called "Ungifted," which followed the life of an 8th grade boy who attended an Academy for Academic Distinction, although he didn't really belong. We used this novel to draw conclusions & predictions for what would happen beyond the text. We used inferences to read between the lines and enjoyed being "detectives" of this novel. We will do a quick, 3 week, unit on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, where we really focus on themes. We will look at the themes of family, holiday, and the difference of time between the novel and present day. This novel will take us to Christmas Break.

7th Grade Religion- We have been busy planning the first Advent Prayer Service for December and have taken some time to look at the meaning of the season. We will continue to touch on the theme of Advent throughout the liturgical season, but will focus on the Beatitudes as our last unit before Christmas. The Beatitudes connect to all aspects of our lives, and we will be making those connections in our own lives. We will also honor Our Lady of Guadeloupe on December 12 and take some time that week to learn and appreciate that story.

6th Grade Language- The 6th graders have been doing great in language class. We have conquered a lot of grammar; everything from subjects and predicates to adverbs and conjunctions! Their final test before Christmas Break will be Tuesday, December 9. That test will be over adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. After we wrap up that unit, we will take the time to do a short writing unit, where students create an interview with a winter character & conduct interviews with other "characters" in their class. This will be a fun way for students to strengthen their speaking and listening skills, as well as develop interview skills! We will also continue to have spelling these next 3 weeks, so please study with your student, as spelling is an integral part of their grade.
