Happy Catholic Schools Week!

I hope everyone is enjoying this week as much as I am-what better way to celebrate our amazing school than with pep assemblies, crazy hats, and grandparents day?! :)

Here is what to look forward to in February for Ms. Campbell's classes...

8th Grade Math- As the year progresses, math will continue to become more challenging. We have switched from 30 problems every night to 25 problems. Additionally, we will be adding in review days for each test. Please continue to communicate with your student about their progress in math, as 8th grade math encompasses many difficult concepts. *Any student in my math (except 8th graders) will be going to take an IARA assessment at St. Francis on February 17th. This test is a tool to test readiness for algebra for the math students--it is just one data point of many used!*

8th Grade Language- Students are finishing up their short story writing units, which we have been working on all through January. We have really focused on characterization and creating a theme/plot that aligns with their characters. These stories will be due on Monday, February 9th. We will finish out the trimester by doing a unit of grammar and usage focused on diagraming sentences. We will start up with spelling again starting the week of February 2nd and will have two weeks of spelling for the remainder of this trimester. Any questions, please contact Ms. Campbell.

7-8th Reading- The students have been working on an independent reading unit where they have chosen their own novels to read and come to class ready to discuss how their novel fits into the thematic unit for the week. They have really enjoyed this unit and do a great job thinking outside of the box. We will finish up the trimester by watching The Maze Runner and connecting it to the novel we read earlier this year. After we finish The Maze Runner, the students will complete a comparison chart between the movie, novel, and their independent novel they chose. We will start 3rd trimester with the novel "The Invisible Man: by H.G. Wells and then move into our Holocaust unit.

7th Grade Language- Students are finishing up their short story writing units, which we have been working on all through January. We have really focused on plot and creating emotions that are evoked by the senses--very detailed writing. These stories will be due on Monday, February 9th. We will finish out the trimester by doing a unit of grammar and usage focused on verb tenses. We will start up with spelling again starting the week of February 2nd and will have two weeks of spelling for the remainder of this trimester. Any questions, please contact Ms. Campbell.

7th Grade Religion- We have been very busy preparing for Catholic Schools Week in religion the past few weeks. We have looked into the history of Catholic Schools Week and why we do what we do-the kids and I learned a lot about this great tradition! We have also been discussing making the right choices--looking through a WWJD do lens on how we would handle situations/how we want others to perceive us. Test scores for that unit have been recorded in the grade book as well as the prayer assignments. Please contact Ms. Campbell with any questions about either of those scores. We will start guidance class once a week starting 3rd trimester.

6th Grade Language- Students are finishing up their short story writing units, which we have been working on all through January. We have really focused on dialogue and how to write convincing dialogue that their characters would actually use. These stories will be due on Monday, February 9th. We will finish out the trimester by doing a unit of grammar and usage focused on parts of speech. We will start up with spelling again starting the week of February 2nd and will have two weeks of spelling for the remainder of this trimester. Any questions, please contact Ms. Campbell.
