May has been a busy month as our school year in art comes to a close! It has been a great year with the students and I have seen much artistic growth with all of the children. I finished up the Trimester with grades 5-8. We spent some time the past few weeks on tonal shading. This is something I want to cover more next year in addition to drawing techniques. I did a pre-assessment to see what level the students were at with the tonal shading. I also did a small art project with 6th grade related to this art concept. Middle school students enjoy drawing and learning about different ways to shade in their artwork.
One of the favorite projects with 7th and 8th grade was a project called "Northern Lights". We used chalk pastels for this and they love using this type of art material. The results were beautiful!
Art Club went well this year. I still didn't get to do as many projects as I wanted with the groups but time limits me. Hopefully we can get to some of those projects next year.
Congratulations to 4 of our St. Joseph students who will have artwork on display this summer at the Des Moines Art Festival in June. The students are:
Kaelynn Jay - grade 2
Yalayzah Lovan - grade 4
Arely Rivas - grade 5
Sam Hunter - grade 7
If you are at the Festival this summer stop by and have a look....the student display will be located at the corner of 13th and Locust Street in downtown Des Moines.
Once again I want to thank you for the opportunity to have your children in my art classroom. I love my job and love nurturing the creativity in my students. Have a great summer!
