Happy Halloween! It was great to see so many parents at conferences a few weeks ago! It was nice to put names with faces and talk about all the wonderful things your child is accomplishing here at school. We are continuing to work hard, and are making a big push to finish the trimester on a high note. The trimester ends on Friday, November 15th. Below are some brief summaries of what we are specifically working on in class:
8th Reading - We are well into To Kill a Mockingbird now. The students love it!! They are doing an excellent job of understanding difficult vocabulary, (this book is full of it), identifying various literary devices that Harper Lee incorporates, and analyzing the various themes of the story. I have extra copies of the book, so if at any time you’d like one to read along, please let me know. As of right now, we are on track to be done with the novel and have our final assessment right before Thanksgiving. We also continue to work on reading fluency daily with timed practice reads. We will be checking our progress on our AR goals this week. Please encourage your student to keep reading at home or during free time so that they can reach their goal.
6th Reading - The students are really getting a handle on Journeys now, and are really getting into class discussions. Each week we work on fluency, as well as reading comprehension strategies identified for the specific story and lesson we are working on. This week is was identifying themes. The students did an excellent job of using text evidence to support their ideas for theme. We have also begun to work 2 days of small group class time into our lessons. For now, we are going to take 7 class periods to finish a lesson, instead of 5. Check your students' assignment notebook for what day we are on. I try to have them mark ahead in their assignment notebooks when day 7 will fall - as this is the day for their assessment over the lesson. We will be checking our progress on our AR goals this week. Please encourage your student to keep reading at home or during free time so that they can reach their goal.
5th & 6th Guidance - Before Iowa Assessments we had a lesson about the importance of these tests, and test-taking strategies to help them do their very best. Last week, and again this week our lessons are about drug awareness, and how to find our “natural highs” by choosing to do healthy things that we enjoy and make us happy. This week is Red Ribbon Week, and the students have shared their knowledge via our morning announcements.
House Council - What a great group of kids! We have had 2 meetings so far, and our focus has been on working to bring back Popcorn Fridays. Look for a parent message soon about volunteering to help with this. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 13th until 4:00 PM. Please pick up your student out front promptly at 4:00, or they will be sent downstairs to B&A.
Hope you get lots of yummy candy!
