Mrs. Rodine's Newsletter - August 2014

Written by

Welcome back to school!   It’s been an interesting few days back with extreme heat, rain, new parking lot, etc.  But we are already having a great time here, meeting new teachers and students, and beginning our learning!

For those of you who don’t know me….my name is Jen Rodine, and I am the Guidance Counselor as well as 6th grade and 8th grade Reading teacher.  This is the beginning of my 17th year in education, almost all of them being here at St. Joseph School.   My husband, Matthew, and I have 3 sons, Mason - 16, Colin-13, and Ethan-10.   When I am not busy with school activities, then I am busy with THEIR school activities!!   One of my favorite things is to be at one of their games on the weekends and run into St. Joe’s kids and parents at their games as well.  I love to read (well, duh!), watch movies, try new recipes, and spend time with family and friends.

But enough about me, here are just a few details about what we have started in our classes so far this year, and what you can expect in the weeks to come:

8th Reading - Today we will take our first quiz over chapters 1-3 of Lord of the Flies.  We had a great discussion yesterday, and I am confident they will all do great!   Each student has a calendar that shows the assigned chapters for the week, as well as reminds them about discussion days and quiz days.  We also started fluency practice this week, and will continue with that this school year.  It really does help their focus when reading, develops vocabulary skills as well as speed when reading.

6th Reading - we are doing well in our work together over Lesson #1 in our Journeys textbook.  Next Tuesday we will get our study guide to help us with review and studying for the assessment on Wednesday.  Please be sure to ask to see your student’s study guide so that you know they have what they need to do well on the assessment!  I will say that this first week has been a struggle with homework.   Not for all students, but I do want you all to be aware that we will have homework almost every day in Reading.  I don’t assign time consuming  tasks; most assignments should be able to be completed in about 15 minutes.  I am also very conscious of making sure the entire class writes the assignment in their assignment notebooks.  Please help reinforce with your student by asking to see their assignment notebooks, and checking their assignments to be sure they are done.

6th Guidance - It starts today!   We will start by working on respect, and how to work respectfully in a group, as well as how to disagree respectfully.  We will use the Second Step curriculum to aid us in discussions and activities around this topic.

Student Council - look for information coming after Labor Day.  Middle school students who want to run for an officer position or class rep will need a signed parent form saying they have permission to participate and aware of the after-school commitment.
