Mrs. Phyllis Konchar

P-KoncharMrs. Phyllis Konchar earned her Elementary Education degree from Iowa State University, Masters degree in Elementary School Administration  from Drake University and Masters in Secondary School Administration from Drake University. She began her career in 1980 teaching 2nd and 3rd grade at Earnest Horn School in Iowa City. Following a move to Des Moines with her husband Dr. Gregory Konchar, she taught 8th grade at St. Joseph's until the birth of their son Sam. After eight years at home,the birth of twins, Luke and Alexandra, and earning a Master's degree from Drake University in School Administration, she returned to the teaching world in the 8th grade at Sacred Heart School in West Des Moines. In 1999 after two short years, Mrs. Konchar returned to St. Joseph's as the school principal. Mrs. Koncahr was recognized by Superintendent Dr. Gubbels and Bishop Pates in January 2009 at the Annual Diocesan School Mass for excellence in meeting the educational needs of our children for fifteen years. In 2010 she was selected as Iowa's 2010 National Distinguished Principal. The 2010 celebration marked the 27th year that the National Association of Elementary Principals had presented this prestigious award.  Earlier in the year, Mrs. Konchar was named Distinguished Principal by the National Education Association. From this award she and two other Catholic Elementary School Principals were honored with National Distinguished Principals Award from NAESP.  Away from school she enjoys baking, crafting, and spending time with her family. She likes learning about the best innovations in the education field. With all her kids now in college she has found a new interest in college athletics and travel between universities.  We thank and applaud Mrs. Konchar for her consistent dedication to excellence in Catholic education and betterment of St. Joseph's School.
